    15:40 When you said the disks went bad, I was immediately thinking of the AWRE and ARRE SCSI modepage settings (bad block relocation) :) DEC also disabled this on their drives to make sure they could do the bad block handling in the OS themselves

    • @DextersTechLab
      @DextersTechLab 2 дні тому

      Yes, turns out disabling bad block relocation will make the drives appear to last far longer but would fail format if you ever try to do it. Probably doesn't help that the disks in these machines would have been heavily used for 10+ years also masking the issue.

    I actually did a variant of the zuluscsi a few years back that could be built for exceptionally cheap. The bluescsi board was simple enough to be able to build without needing too many pricey parts, and I used one of the weact blackpill variants that was pin compatible enough - just one pin had to be left disconnected on one of the headers. From memory one could be built for well under $10 each plus the sd card However because it wasn't using the more advanced features that zuluscsi could do, I suspect it might not have been fast enough for your purpose

  • @AmauryJacquot
    @AmauryJacquot 4 дні тому

    wouldn't the actual performance depend on the type of SD card or SSD being used ? good thing the firmware of the zulu-SCSI is opensource (GPLv3) so it can be modified to implement a simulation of the missing features were the fixes sent as a pull request ?

    • @DextersTechLab
      @DextersTechLab 4 дні тому

      The maximum throughput of the ZuluSCSI is mostly dependent on the speed the RP2040 can write to the SD card, which is way below the rated speed of the SD card itself.

    • @DextersTechLab

      Yes, it's about 500 watts for HAL and Dylan at idle, but +30 watts when processing video. That's about 200 watts less than a period correct setup.

    Thank you for getting this monster running again and showing the work process. Fascinating to see that from a hardware perspective, so much was done with dedicated hardware while the computer itself is a comparatively modest 68k. I really like to utilitarian user interface - 3D buttons? who needs that? Back when this was state of the art and used by tv networks, I imagined such systems to be way more like high performance computer and less dedicated hardware, something like 100x 68k processors in some fancy parallel arrangement. Somehow actually really elegant to achieve this result with some fast logic and what is essentially an atari or macintosh...
